You know you're "aplatanado" when...This entry is a collective effort by DR1 posters. We got about 100 suggestions on the thread, and here are my favourites. Some suggestions, excellent as they were, were excluded because this, after all, is a family blog. Some others I left out because they were less uniquely Dominican. Others were paraphrased or combined. Aplatanado/aplatanada literally means "becoming like a plantain". It's what Dominicans say about foreigners who "go native" and end up more Dominican than the Dominicans themselves. Thanks to all the contributors. I couldn't have done this by myself. So, you know you're "aplatanado/a" when 1. You don't mind washing dishes with cold water. In fact, using hot water seems strange now. 2. You can't eat a meal without going through half a dozen "servilletas". 3. You turn around when someone calls out "rubia" even though you’re a brunette. 4. You tell someone: "I’ll be there in 5 minutes" and show up 2 hours later! 5. You completely forgot where, or indeed what, the lever for the indicators (turn signals) is. 6. You never dim the headlights for oncoming traffic. 7. You think a two-pack of "chicle" is preferable to receiving change 8. You phone someone and ask "Quien habla?" 9. You don't feel awkward going to the colmado to buy just one diaper. 10. You scrunch up your nose when you didn't quite understand what was just said to you. 11. You point to things with your lips. 12. You consider some mangú enough for your supper. 13. You say "ay pica! pica!" if there is black pepper in your food. 14. "Ya tu sabes", "un chin", "oh-oh" and "que vaina" become part of your everyday speech. 15. You start saying "Voy pa' la "Charle Degol" or "a la Churchi" instead of "Charles de Gaulle" or "Churchill". 16. You sport a large motoconcho muffler burn (or remnants of one) on your right calf! 17. The roosters stop bothering you with their singing in the morning. 18. You shower with cold water. 19. You get plantain stains on your shirt from making pasteles en hoja. 20. You start wearing high heels with your jeans. 21. It rains and you think "good day for sancocho". 22. You go to the colmado with nothing in your pocket and say "Te pago mañana" (I’ll pay you tomorrow). 23. You invite people at 6pm so they’ll show up at 8pm. 24. You scream out loud "llegó la luz" (electricity is back) 25. You all go out and stop for some beers and the driver is the first one to get his. 26. You go to the beach without a towel and spend most of the time in the water drinking your rum. 27. It starts to rain and you reach for a plastic bag to protect your hair! 28. Taking a shower you wash your underwear or panties. 29. When someone calls your name you respond "wheyyy" (out loud). 30. Instead of saying adios, you say "pa' lante" 31. Instead of calling a foreigner by his name, you call him by his nationality or better yet simply call out his country's name: "Oye España, hey Italia!" 32. You say "a po’ ta bien". 33. You say "Dame un salandru" instead of "Salt Andrews". 34. You remember every single phone number without having to look it up, not to mention your cédula number. 35. Your back seat of your car is actually a huge pair of speakers and the trunk is a huge sub woofer. 36. You know which gas stations have dodgy meters on their pumps. 37. You stop by the bomba to fill up your vehicle for 200 pesos, if not 100. 38. You don't care about having curlers in your hair when walking to the market in broad daylight. 10:03 PM - Oct. 19, 2006
