The "nicest" hotel in Higüey would be the Barceló Naranja something hotel. Its in the area of the basilica, but I don't know if such hotel is still open or even under the Barceló name.

I'll check. Hold on...

Aparently, its no longer part of the Barcelo Hotel chain. Its name/contact info is the following:

Hotel El Naranjo Bávaro
Altagracia 23
Higüey
(809) 554-5455

Notice that it says "Bávaro", hence not sure if its simply a name change or if the original El Naranjo in downtown Higuey closed and/or was relocated to the coast.

Call the number and verify.

554 number is in Higuey so it should be in Higuey. El Naranjo area is also in front of basilica, so that should verify. But I haven't heard of Naranjo hotel. There are couple of hotels around basilica, and there is one that seems to be "nicer" than the rest of the bunch, and also way more expensive. It is in front of the Esso gas station, near Rochel. It well might be the one mentioned by NALs.

Default Hotel Don Carlos

May I suggest the Hotel Don Carlos. It is located near the basilica.
(809) 554-2713 It is a modest facility with an in house restaurant.

The Hotel Naranjo is a memory now, just an empty building. Barcelo gave up its administration of the facility when the gov't (the owner) ended the lease.

PJT

Yes, that's it! Hotel Don Carlos. That's the one I was thinking of. It's the best thing in town.

PJT was doing some more research for another poster and would like to add the rate as of this date for one night single accomodation at the Don Carlos is in the area of US $38. The reception closes at 11:30 pm and the restaurant opens for breakfast at 7 am.

Don Carlos: Tel. (809) 554-2713 and Fax. (809) 554-1942
