Jackieboo has had tremendous problems to get into DR1 (this is current as of yesterday) and in fact has not seen any of this since a week or so ago. So, give a little break here ...

Thanks for the update Chris - as it is difficult for him to get into DR1, perhaps he could e-mail me in the 'Old Fashioned Way'! ~ Grahame.

I followed this thread at the beginning and now came back and read the last few pages. Im not sure what transpired in the middle 15 pages or so, but I have a VERY interested sponsor for Cabarete. There is a company from Sosua that has put several trash cans on the beach and some in the streets of Cabarete, I assume they have done something similar in Sosua...we will be working with them on a sponsor level with a very big committment to provide not just $$ for ads on the trash cans, but uniformed personnel to collect trash and empty the cans, as well as additional signage to create awareness for what we are doing, and hoping others will do.

If there are still people interested in this campaign, please email or PM me....or reply here. I would like your input.

If this news report is to be believed it appears that there is news about a Cabarete clean up.
Sosúa-News

Kudos to Garry Kooy! His number is on the news item if anyone wants to contact him & support his efforts.

The problem is real and I think anyone willing to get involved should be commended......not sure if the Green Theme has hit DR yet..sure does not seem so. My first visit last week and I was shocked by the litter..what a waste of such beautiful countryside.

There's is a tiny effort being made at the national level, but nothing of substance, although some communities have organized clean up programs and are starting to make a difference.

Garry has been in the D.R. for many years and has made a small difference. He speaks spanish, english and dutch. Garry has the education, drive and vision. But as with most projects in the D.R. , getting politcal support for something correct is over shadowed by others willing to "donate" (to the party) for their own profit. Money (large amount) have disappeared. Pledged money is forgotten. Man power evaporates or wants to change direction for personal gain.

Garry has the use of 1800 sq. meters of my land for a new plant nursery and education center, but can not get the money or people. Garry has a small boat he is trying to finish for ocean classes, but could use some help. He has/had a TV program and conducts classes at the military and D.R. coast guard stations. He is working with many people...

He can use help. Garry is worth supporting.

Great info, Ringo.
IMHO, DR1ers will be wanting to help, but not before knowing Gary a bit more.
It sounds to me like he's a fine man with great aspirations and a good heart, but as you may have seen on some threads, there have been problems with donated money not reaching the intended destination.
I certainly am not insinuating that Gary is anything less than a man of ethics and high morals.
I just think that he will get support from DR1ers, only after he is known to them/us.
Any suggestions?

Rocky,
I don't know how to prove that someone is honest. We can read the DR1 threads and see that the D.R. appears to have a larger then most countries problem with others with thier left hand in your pocket while shaking your right. I too have seen several US $1000.s leaving me, much of it, sorry to say, by ex-pats.

Garry works with a university and it was a respected person (as I remember?) that took off with Somoncas' (sp) money. With all the set backs that he has had, and still having, he manages to pick himself up and tries again.

I suggest that you, Rocky, give him a call and invite him over for a coffee. He lives close to your place.

PM me if you desire more. I do not wish to talk about someone else in a public forum. Thanks. Ringo
