Default Anyone know what is going on in Los Haitises?

Reading reports on this website of 1,200 military evicting the farmers from Los Haitises - anyone know of where I can get more information on this?

There are some small blurbs in various on-line media outlets, but nothing in-depth that I have seen, so far.

Here's one from DominicanToday:

Still no one in any of the media reports have mentioned the fact that the people who were evicted when the park was created, and again when it was expanded in 1994, were promised compensation and never recieved un chele. Plus this line about streams is rubbish - the place is a low-lying calcitic landscape - how many streams come out of there?

Default Drug raids

The report in yesterday's Listin had pictures of troops moving in and said that there were "drug points" inside the park. Later in the story, it reported that there were "new harvests" so one assumes that there were marijuana patchs, yes?

There was a report a few days ago about yautía and other crops being cultivated for export to PR - the implication being that the squatters are not just poor subsistence farmers but that there is larger scale commercial farming going on, hence the references to "interests".

Cheers Chiri for the insight - there was a big brouha in the early nineties over evictions of subsistence farmers in Los Haitises, where only "interests" were compensated for loss of land. I was pretty sceptical about the export and drugs references, but the "interests" thing changes it somewhat. 1,400 troops for 100 families still sounds like the heavy-handed response of the early 1990s.

Just found this blog: Eco Lucha RD is made up of a number of organisations like La Revuelta, Projuventud, Juventud Caribe, Felabel, Colectivo Menta, Marohu, Revolución 65 & others to join in efforts to combat the installation of a cement factory in Los Haitises. It would appear that the Government have granted a licence to Grupo Aceros Estrella, to whom they owe money, according to this.

Photos showing how much land clearance has already happened:

According to Sacandomelao blog, the nearest community is against this but some are receiving payments of 200-300 pesos a week to promote it & not be truthful about the effects and consequences.

According to MY sources, this is a corporation owned by Felix Garcia (Productos Linda, Envases Antillanos, El Caribe, La Fabril, Troqueldom, etc etc etc), Manuel Estrella (El Caribe, Aceros Estrella, Cemento Dominicano) and Huascar Rodriguez Jr (Cementos Cibao) in an attempt to get closer to the major comsumer markets of the East and Santo Domingo...

I do not think it can be stopped.
