I'd never heard of that one. But been that it was the first place a thief looked in when he broke in my appartment I will definitely not get a good night sleep if I had money under the mattress.
There are a lot of old wives tales around, this I posted on another thread:
A little curious note on Dominican Folklore: You are not supposed to work or do any effort on Corpus Christi. That is a "bad thing" (cosa mala), which for Dominicans is one of those things that nobody knows why is offensive to God. Go figure. When I was a kid my grandma told us this folk tale of a guy who was plowing the field on a Corpus Christi day. His bull turned to him and SPOKE, complaining that he wasn't supposed to work on that day. There was some fun in the story, which I dont' remember since grandma died when I was 8 and at the old age of 31 I am already quite senile.
Now that I took that road, I also remember that I was told (later obviously) that having sex on a Good Friday (Easter friday) is a "bad thing". People who do, supposedly, will be stuck the rest of the day in whatever position they were in. I have failed to see where the punishment is.

When a child bends over and looks at you through between their legs, it is said that they want another little brother or sister.

Viernes santo
Hey PIB you're quite funny. Speaking of good Friday, I grew up with my Grandma who had this custom of fasting (not talking or eating) for the whole Friday. On good Friday, we would get up really early, and go take a swim in the river (Camu) before doing anything. You were not supposed to talk during this time. This one time my brother was there with us. So my Grandma wakes us up and we head out to the river. When we went into the river, my brother stepped into a part that was much deeper than he expected so he startled, blurts out "Ay que oyo!", to which without thinking twice I responded "Callate...tu no sabe que hoy no se habla...". We both laughed about that one for a long time. Even my grandma had a good laugh...

Never place a loaf of bread upside down on the table. Never move a household on a Friday. ( Man did I ever jinks alot of people in real estate on that one). If your spill oil sprinkle salt on it. Never touch your face when you crave something and your pregnant. Oh Wait ! theses are Italian superstitions. My grandmaother had lots, I never believed in them but stayed on the safe side and I never passed them on to the kids.

Speaking of fruit and superstitions I believe there's a superstition in the DR that a pregnant woman should not walk underneath a guanabana tree, because she may lose her child. Another one has to do with Pastilla (Watermelon). If you eat the seeds you will get stomach pains and die. I think this one has slowly disappeared as I now see people eating watermelon all over the place.

whenever I visit DR my grandmother ties a little red ribbon around my wrist...to guard me against "mal de ojo", whatever that means.

menstrating women
My wife's friend was menstrating and was at another friend's house and she held their newborn baby. The baby started to get congestested (I think) so they took a hair off the mentrating friend's head and tied it around the wrist of the baby for 24 hours and the baby returned to his normal condition.

They do that with babies with hiccups, put a hair from the mother's head on the baby's head until the hiccups go away.

Another one is that we cant sleep with our feet pointing towards the road, because thats the way dead poeple are laid to rest!?
If you pass over your husband when you are pregnet he will get all the morning sickness! ex. he is laying on the bed and you go over top of him.
If your are pregnet and you hold a girl, and the baby kicks you will have a girl, and vice versa.
One time we were shopping and there was this guy with a deformed face( no nose just 2 holes in his face) my husband told me not to look at him because the baby will come out that way!
DRtechie- I have heard of that one, Ruben bought a bracelet for my daughter like that except it had a black hand on it.
Anna here is another one with salt, never ever bring salt to your new house, or a broom!
