Default Worried about Petrocaribe!

Is anyone else concerned as to what will to happen to our (DR) supply of refined oil products and crude when "it HITS the fan in Venezuela"? There are rumblings that the POT is about to boil over in Caracas, and if so, we may be looking at twice the current pricing for combustibles (gasoline/diesel). These rumblings are more like a precurser to an earthquake (temblores), as Chavez is having trouble with some of his Military now. Get ready to feel the Tsunami from the shores of Venezuela, which will certainly impact us here in the DR, possible before Christmas 2007. Hold on tight for a wild ride! I hope I am wrong on this one..

How can that be? Chavez is a man of the people, duly elected, and a most popular leader.

I understand and share your concern, but I really doubt Chavez is going anywhere any time soon. In spite of all his rethoric Chavez is a smart guy and he's learned well from Fidel. He knows to keep the military (the real holder of the power in any country) happy by giving them anything they wish and not ruffle The US too much (he continues to supply all the oil The US wants to buy from him). He's taking complete control of the country. Opposition is divided and weak.

With oil at an all time high he continues to get all kinds of money to dole out as he pleases...and the truth is that he's spending tons of this money on social programs that previous corrupt governments were just pocketing.

In practical terms Venezuelans are much better off right now. Even as Chavez talks about socialism consumption is at an all time high. For instance I read the other day that American car companies (particularly GM which assembles cars in Venezuela) can't keep up with demand so they are having to import more than expected. The import of fine expensive whiskies and hummers are growing exponentially...

Example of one of many articles discussing this topic: Venezuela | The rise of the “Boligarchs” | Economist.com

December 2nd will be an important date in Venezuela, that being the date when the plebiscite to modify their constitution takes place. If all goes as it has gone since 1998 I think Dominican Republic will still be receiving oil from there. Maybe SamaJon has some CIA inside info we are lacking.

Not one bit...
The so called "signs" about Venezuela becoming a hot potato in the near future is a lot of manure that has been put out in the media, thanks in part to the Republican "Democratic" initiative in Latin countries, to create dissent among the population in Venezuela. In fact the reverse is happening (why am I not amazed?) because most people that support Chavez are in fact now more ardent about the finger prints of our (Bushie) gov in the background.

The deal hammered between the administration of Chavez and the DR is not something that could be just shut down by any pro-US coup plotters in Venezuela. Since it will mean that the DR will NOT be under any obligation to repay the crude oil already shipped and refined in the country.

So it would create a + situation if it was to happen as its being put!

The DR buys the crude from the spot market most of the time (before the deal with Chavez) and as such could continue to do so if a cut off is done after any successful plot against Chavez.

It means that the DR would not have to pay millions in interest and the actual main that was "credited".

Believe you me, if in fact Bush is able to carry out a 100% turn over in Caracas without much problem, within days the whole belt of oil in use at the time in Venezuela will be the target of large guerrilla warfare.

If you think Iraq's oil is important and things are HOT there now, just imagine for a sec what hell on earth Venezuela's oil fields in fire would represent to this part of the world!!!!

Just remind yourself that Chavez was back in power within a matter of winks after the US backed coup and not in little part to the Venezuelan military...

Latin America is not the desolated backyard the US had before when they placed puppets in power. Things have changed much nowadays...

If you want to worry about oil, worry about Iran! That's the match walking in the sea of gasoline, waitin' for some cowboy fool to light it...
