Thank you!
Current (as of yesterday) lowest price at PriceMart: 52K (Pesos... about USD 1880.oo) for a 42". Most likely still cheaper than importing by yourself.

Not yet, I am afraid. Still $200 more than importing one and without having to time a trip to Santiago to see if there is a deal/availability.

I've been told that they're aiming to open sometime in December but this is Dominican Republic we're talking about. I hope I am wrong but, nothing is ever done on time in DR.

I drove by the IKEA construction site about two weeks ago. Still looks like a skeleton constuction site . I would be surprised if they open at all in late 2009.......

Oh man, I think I saw one at the new Plaza llama on Maximo Gomez on corner with Ovando , up in Christo Rey. they had one of those humongous two unit jobs ( one is a Fridge they other a freezer ) I did not mark down a price, and not sure if they are sold separately or as a matched pair. but if just happen to be in SD, stop by Plaza Llama.

there are plenty of deep freezers there also, one that looks like a boat, really big.

deep freezers have an advantage, that they keep their cool longer if power goes out, cold air being heavier than normal room temp air, the cold stays put, inside the freezer when you open it, unlike uprights, all the cold pours out onto the floor, to chill your feet at night when your raiding the freezer for Ice cream at 3AM.
