Default STDs in DR

It's understood, there are a lot of folks who used, use and will use service of sex workers. I just came across a moderator's post about women tested in a clinic and most of them have had STDs. If so, there must be a lot of guys who may have had medical problems when they were back home from DR and I'd like to hear if anyone has had anything to worry about or heard about what was the real size of this problem. Inderstood that it is delicate subject and it would probably no one who could come up and say I contracted herpes or anything else much worse in DR...

When your in DR use the same precautions you would normally use where you live and you will have no problems in DR. I have been travelling to DR now for well over 12 years and have never had a problem so be careful and enjoy.

CC it was me that said it in another thread. I was quoting Meredith.

I would think most people would have the good sense to use condoms. Yeah yeah I know what you've said in the past but people should still protect themselves.

Only, to realize a few minutes later that CIAC hands out free condoms to those who need them. They also do promotion through posters being put up around the community about safe sex, and talking to various communities and bateyes about safe sex through presentations and to the youth through drama. So, there are groups that do promote this and teaches about safe sex, however there is just not enough of them reaching out to all of the tiny, tiny, or even bigger campos, bateyes, barrios about this issue and AIDS.

Also, with CEA and another government organization, I went to some very very poor bateyes to hand out birth control and to give the results of pap smear tests that were performed on many of the young women in the communities. Every test, came back with something wrong with the woman and medication handed out. It was very disturbing, because in Canada, you would never expect anything to come back positive. Also, birth control is very hard to come by, therefore not many of the girls could access this service for free.

So, there are some organizations out there, just not enough to target all areas and not enough money for NGO's to promote this without more government assistance.

Default He was probably referring to

Those women in the sex trade that were tested. A huge number of them are HIV positive, this has been commented on in numberous articles and threads. As for things such as genitle herpes, syphilis aand gonorhea, these are even more widespread.

Be wise, be safe, be sure...

Any time you speak of percentages in this country I am very wary. Frankly I don't think this country has the first clue about what they say and at best everything is a guesstimate and not a fact. The more I travel around this country and see how things work in the Government Offices the more I believe what I just said.

Using condoms is a very good idea in this country and any other country and that fact I don't believe needs to be tossed back and forth like it is on this board. You would have to be deaf and dumb for your whole life not to know that fact of life when it comes to the pros.

The reason I mentioned herpes is condoms may not protect from that disease, it is incurable though of course not fatal like HIV, but nevertheless can be painful and bring some intimate problems. Considering the number of clients those sex workers have sex with I may assume it must be widespread issue for both.

Zorbabr,
Alot of sex workers in the DR have or may have had stds thoughout their lives. Some are curable, treatable, and of course life-threatening. It's the risk that you take. One simply has to decide wether or not it's worth it to them.

Honestly,I would'nt say that most pros in the RD are HIV positive, but I've heard that most of them have herpes and other incurable diseases.

All over the internet you find sex tourists, who frequent the DR giving elaborate details of their adventures with dominican women. Those are the lucky ones, who return unscathed. The ones you don't hear from though are the guys that get BURNED. I'm sure it happens, condoms do break. Not to mention that condoms don't provide complete protection for all stds out there.

Default HIV/AIDS In Dr

There are 130,000 adults between the ages of 15-45 living with AIDS in the Dominican Republic.

4,800 children under the age of 15 has the virus.

A total of 260,000 children DR have been orphaned due to the AIDS epidemic.

keep in mind these stats come from documented cases, one must consider those who have not been tested and are unaware of their HIV/AIDS status

DR is not the only country that has a problem with AIDS, STD's, prostitution, tourists coming for reasons other than to visit the historic monuments, garbage collection, corrupt politicians (have you ever been to rural Louisiana?), being mean to animals, crooked lawyers, salmonella, pediphile priests, homeowner association nazis, etc., etc., etc..

There are ways to prevent or keep from having any of them affect you.

A soapbox ain't one of them. Getting on one to preach, expecting results, is like peeing in a pair of dark wool slacks: you feel all warm and fuzzy, but nobody notices.

Using ones brain and common sense is.
