Default Hotel question...Santo Domingo

I am coming to SD in three weeks, and I usually stay with family or at the Clarion Hotel, but I would like to stay in a new part of town. What do you recommend???

I was nice, cheap, and safe...

Here are a few I found (can you give me some options):

1. Hotel residence-venezia: In Gazcue
2. Hotel Mercure Comercial: Zona Colonial
3. Dona Elvira B&B: Zona Colonial

Or if you can suggest some others...Thanks!

A friend is staying at Doņa Elvira this week - IMO the best of the three.

Condo-Parque at the edge of the Zona Colonial near Parque Independencia is nice as well, and has free wireless. Very good value for money.

Default Hotel Atarazana

I just spent 2 great days at the Atarazana. The "guesthouse" is really quaint with 1860s tile floors but beautiful modern upgrades, like rooftop terrace and bathroom fixtures. I really liked the location too. Every time we went somewhere, we'd cross either the Plaza de Espagna or walk down Isabel la Catolica. Our host, Susanne, felt like a friend she's so warm and helpful with city info. The breakfast is not to be missed either!

There are other places to see and stay, but I'd find it difficult to return to SD and not stay there again.

Send me a PM if you'd like to see some pictures.

Default Maison Gautreaux A Sleeper that you will love

I have been to SD many times and always have stayed at the big chains. During my most recent trip which was 3 weeks and ended yesterday. I HIGHLY recommend the Hotel Maison Gautreaux... En Santo Domingo, Algo Distinto.. This is located near the Malecon and close to the InterContinental and is only 4 blocks from el Conde and 4 blocks the opposite away from the University.

The Maison Gautreaux is definitely a sleeper. This place is nestled in a quite neighborhood with really nice rooms and PLENTY of Safety. They have 24 hours armed guards on the premises and the place is clean and great. Best of all is the Rate! - You will not find a better deal anywhere in SD. If you are going there on business or pleasure you will have a great experience. I also believe that if you are going to be there for more than 1 week, you can get a better rate if you speak to the Manager. I highly recommend this hotel for anyone going to SD for 1 day or 100 days..... You just can't beat it. Oh, by the way, when you arrive; tell them that the "Guy from Rhode Island" recommended this place.

Worried also about Privacy? - Don't worry..... They specialize in it..

Enjoy your trip.

Rates at the Maison Gautreax depend on the room size and the number of days. But for a single room (King Size Bed) was $32 USD per day for 3 weeks. I think that this room is about $40 USD per day if you are less than 4 days or less..... Good Luck
