Olga has now changed into a tropical storm instead of this sub-tropical stuff that none of us know how to deal with Maximum winds are closer around the center and the good news is that weakening of the storm is happening. Noaa says that even large and powerful hurricanes cannot maintain strength after interaction with Hispaniola's high terrain.

Rainfall predictions remain unchanged. The center is now about 55 miles Northwest of Santo Domingo. Wind strength estimates remain unchanged at maximum 60 miles per hour and still moving Westwards at around 14 or 15 miles per hour.

The primary threat remains flooding .. we're already wet from Noel.

I happen to be in the U.S. for a couple of weeks, but can provide a mini Cabarete update as of 11:15pm local DR time.

Cabarete area's internet has been out for a couple of hours now. Not seeing any friends online. Cellular service is working. Just spoke to a friend living in Ocean Dream. That area is fairly well sheltered and he had not seen any damage from his apartment, however said wind was too strong to venture out. He thought that perhaps Marabu's tent was damaged as heard some very loud noises from that direction. Thinks there's likely to be other damage due to blowing debris and to weak structures just based on the sustained high winds.

Sosua 11:15pm local DR time - I can remotely access a server I have in Sosua, so internet is working there at least in some locations.

Here in Cofresi its been blowing about 50mph (with higher gusts) since 9pm, Puerto Plata is a mess with downed trees and signs.

Very strange storm, to gain strength while the center of it was over land, but thats probably because the big part of the storm was over water and fed moisture into the center.

Just talked to another friend in Cabarete. (Cellular's obviously still working for the moment & cable tv was as well). He lives out near the Texaco station in a 'Dominican style' house with an aluminum roof. He's not had a problem with his house so far. I actually woke him up with my call.

He'd spoken with another friend of ours who works in Cabarete who advised that as of 10:30 Casanova, Lax, and Onno's were open & that part of Lax's 'techo' had blown away.

I guess more reliable & detailed updates will come after dawn. If no one's online, I'll make a few phone calls when I wake up & post what I learn.

Unfortunately, those who can least afford to are usually the ones that suffer most in these storms

Looking at this looks like its going WNW. Centre looks further north than last advisory. Must have wobbled again - if this is due west I need a change of specs.

Well it seems here on Santiago Yaque river its really high, i heard on the channel 25 that they took around 5000 m3 of water out of the Tavera's Damn so far i heard that the water is very high at the level of Bellavista *not confirmed yet. Any reports from someone on that area would be good to know the situation, by the way according to NOAA:
