We are a family of four (2 sons 15 and 11) from Connecticut. USA. We were at the Iberostar 4/17-23. This was one of the best vacations we have ever taken. My husband who is very very picky loved the place. He really could find nothing to complain about. I spent hours reading reviews and am so glad I picked the Iberostar in Puerto Plata. I originally wanted to go to Punta Cana but the flights didn't work out for our days of travel. Our flights to Puerto Plata were nonstop which was important. They were on time too. The whole trip for six nights, with two rooms cost us less than $4000. This was so inexpensive compared to the other Caribbean destinations that we had to give it a try. Despite all the scary stories of sickness, aggressive vendors, rude people, etc. we went and had a wonderful vacation. There was a language barrier that affected my 11 year old a bit. Most of the kids his age were German and he felt a little awkward. He still loved the place and didn't want to leave. The beach was nicer than I expected. All the reviews say how much nicer Punta Cana is. I am sure they are right but this hotel had a lovely beach with very clear water(the seaweed could have been raked but at least there wasn't any garbage on the sand like at the other hotels in Playa Dorada). The water was very rough the last two days due to an unusual amount of rain. It then became cloudy. The watersports were cancelled as was my snorkeling excursion to Sosua. If I have any complaints it would be that the buffet food gets a little tired after a few days. There are a lot of choices and I could always find something to eat but I think if they had different theme nights it would be an improvement. Also they could add a few more ala carte restaurants. Also the hamburgers had seasoning in the meat therefore my picky kids wouldn't eat them. They ate a lot of fries, bread and ice cream on this trip. That ice cream and dessert bar was fantastic. Oh well, so now we're all on diets. We ate in the Mexican twice (very good) and the Brazilian once (good). The Caribbean restaurant was booked past our departure date which annoyed me a bit. None of us got sick. I took Pepto every day but no one else in my family did. We didn't do any trips because we were happy to just relax at the beautiful resort. My 11 year old would have liked to go to the water park but we never made it. There were lots of activities going on to keep everyone happy. My 15 year old participated in numerous sports tournaments and loved it. He made friends with one of the Star friends - Julio who was always around to play ping pong with. He even participated in one of the evening shows. They were ok, nothing spectacular but something to do at night. The people working at the resort were very friendly and we were so impressed with how hard they work and always seem so happy. The other guests, while mostly European were very nice and we didn't experience any of the reported obnoxious behaviour. I did some shopping at the huts on the beach. The better deals were at the ones right next to the beach on the left. There was a large of huts further down near the Jack Tar resort. They guys there were a little harder to bargain with. I bought some larimar bracelets, a beach coverup and some t shirts all for $35. I probably could have spent less but I felt I was helping to contribute to these very poor people. All in all a very successful, fun and educational vacation. Someday I would like to return, at least to another Iberostar Hotel.
