I just returned from my 4th visit to Santo Domingo and each time I have stayed at the Duque de Wellington. I have always been treated well, but each time it gets better. I feel like family and am treated as such. The entire staff is always pleasant and accomodating. While the ambience may not be 5 star, the hotel is much more like visiting a relative's home. My room is always #206, with a huge balcony and comfortable surroundings. For a good homelike feeling , I would highly recommend Emilio and the Duque de Wellington.

Bottom lines during my 8 day stay in NOV 2005:
-Gay hangout & hook-up spot in town
-discovered a gay porno "Machos Locos" in our VCR upon arrival
-"friendly" travel agent located in hotel lobby(Elvin) is a rip-off- do not trust him, he charges wayyyy to much
[learn to take a taxi which charges much less for the same- we did it with minimal Spanish]
-restaurant in hotel charges different prices for the same order (we had a lemonade & beer)each time
-no iron or ironing board available- what hotel doesn't have these?
-roaches...yes roaches in the hall scurrying along (saw them on several occasions)

Only thing that was good about this hotel was its's in the middle of everything. But there are plenty of what seemed like better and nicer hotels in the same area.

Not a good a idea for families, elderly or disabled (stairs only), and the wise.

I wouldn't go back there...but I'd definitely return to Santo Domingo- it's a beautiful city.

Hotel Owner is Emilio Baldi

I stayed at the Wellington in February of 2003 and I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. The staff is very accomodating. I arrived from New York City just minutes before the restaurant on the 1st floor was to close. I was starving, but not quite familiar with the neighborhood. I asked the staff if I could order something from the menu and they were so gracious and kind. They prepared a big bowl of spaghetti. I could go on and on about all the ways the staff made me feel comfortable. Even though the Wellington doesn't have the most luxurious appointments, the staff and proximity to the electric nightlife more than make up for any minor shortcomings. I'm planning a trip for the 4th of July weekend and I will definitely be staying at the Wellington.
