Miss DR is second in Miss World
Miss Dominican Republic, 18-year old Claudia Cruz, was the first runner up in the Miss World contest held in China. She was second only to Miss Peru. The three other finalists were from the United States, the Philippines and Poland. This was the first time the event was opened up to voting from around the world by the Internet. Cruz also won the title of Queen of the Caribbean. In an interview with Hoy newspaper, she commented that the people of Chinese liked her type — a blend of dark skin with Caucasian features.
She said that she would be participating in an international tourism promotion campaign for the Dominican Republic. In January, she is committed to travel with Miss World 2005, Maria Julia Montilla and Miss United States (the second runner up) to Ethiopia for social work.
In 2003, the Dominican Republic’s Amelia Vega won the title of Miss Universe.
Festival of Son
The FestiSON, organized by Cultura del Caribe of Raul (Bacho) Perez Pena, will take place from 14-17 December. The Latin music event that celebrates “son” music opens on the 14th with a presentation at the corner of Pimentel and Baltazar de los Reyes, in Villa Consuelo, an uptown barrio of Santo Domingo. It then moves on to Casa de Teatro on Arzobispo Merino, with a presentation that same evening at 7 pm. It will also tour several of the nightspots where son music is danced. These are Sarten, Cubania, Etnia Musical, Campo Verde, El Monumento del Son, el Secreto Musical, el Club 60, la Bodeguita de la Habana Vieja, el Maunaloa and the Las Palmas piano bar of the Hotel Santo Domingo.
Sammy Sosa’s wedding
Chicago Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa and his spouse of many years, Sonia, will be married by a priest in Casa de Campo in La Romana during the Christmas holidays. Invitations are being sent out to attend the wedding set for 18 December at the Bahia Minitas 7 villa. Sosa surprised Sonia with the proposal when celebrating his birthday in a restaurant in Paris last month.
The Producers in Santo Domingo
The Producers, with Van Temple (guitar, vocals), Wayne Famous (keyboards, vocals), Kyle Henderson (bass) and Bryan Holmes (drums) are back for a one-night show of tight, hard rocking band music and vocals in the parking lot of Americana Departmentos on Av. John F. Kennedy. They promise to perform the music that made them famous – What’s He Got, She Sheila and I love Lucy, Who Do You Think You Are, and more recent songs from their Coelacanth album of 2001.
This is the third time they perform in the DR. They were first here in 1982 for a performance at the Altos de Chavon, they returned in 1983 for performances at the Palacio de los Deportes in Santo Domingo and in Santiago to full house crowds that appreciated the great vocals, clever lyrics and great instrumental work.
