Friday, 30 September is a big day for Barahona as it marks the resuming of regular scheduled flights into the Maria Montez International Airport. Caribair small planes will be commuting from Santo Domingo on Monday, Friday and Sunday, departing at 8:30 am and returning at 5 pm. There will also be regular flights on weekends to Port-au-Prince, Haiti from Barahona. The Barahona Tourism Cluster group has put together several tour packages of interest to those that now may connect with other destinations and fly into Barahona. |Miss Universe benefit
Miss Universe 2003, Amelia Vega from the Dominican Republic will host a fashion show-benefit for the St. Jude Foundation that assists children with cancer in the Dominican Republic. 15 beauty queens from Latin America and the Caribbean will come for the event. Co-hosts of the event are other former winners of the Miss Dominican Republic title, including Selinee Mendez (1998), Merfry Then (1999), international fashion model Ruth Ocumarez (2003) and Larimar Fiallo (2004).
Latin American beauty queens that are coming are Aida Estrada (Miss Guatemala), Johanna Fernandez, Miss Costa Rica; Luisana Cecilia, Miss Aruba; Ximena Zamora, Miss Ecuador; Casandra Castro, Miss World Puerto Rico 2005; Fiorella Castellano, Miss Peru; Karina Buttner, Miss Paraguay; Desiree Duran, Miss Bolivia, and Nicole Dupont, Miss Uruguay. All represented their countries in the 2005 Miss Universe contest.
Fashion designers Nicolas Felizola from Venezuela, Angel Yanez from Colombia, Luis Antonio from Puerto Rico, and Dominicans Jenny Polanco, Jorge Diep and Modesta Castillo will display their creativity at the event scheduled for Thursday, 29 September at the Salon La Fiesta of the Hotel Jaragua.
There will also be artistic performances by Maridalia Hernandez, Maximo Martinez, the Christian music choir of Ivelisse Gell. Coming from Mexico, former MDO, Pablo Portillo. All will be under the musical direction of maestro Manuel Tejada. This is a production of Chiqui Haddad.

|Felucho and Nuria are just friends
They are just friends now, Hoy newspaper reports on the relationship between Tourism Minister Felix (Felucho) Jimenez and TVís prime investigative journalist, Nuria Piera. The newspaper highlights that the last time they were seen together as a couple was on 29 July at the Aventura concert at the Fortaleza Ozama. The newspaper reveals that Jimenez confirmed that he and Piera relationship had become serious in February of this year, and that they would be touring Europe and the United States together on occasion of the Aventura grand tour.
|Small hotels workshop
The Sosua & Cabarete Hotel Association, in coordination with the Caribbean Hotel Association has prepared a workshop for small hotel managers, owners and operators. The workshop will provide owners, managers and operators of small hotels with new tools to improve management. Participants will receive a copy of the CHA Reference Manual for Small Hotels, a guide to implement best practices in hotel operations. The objectives of the workshop are to develop a mission and vision of the hotel and identify key elements of the business. Identify two areas of development in each department based on a review of the chapters of the Reference Manuel provided. Develop a plan for service enhancement based on the two critical areas previously identified. It is scheduled to take place 29-30 September at the Puerto Plata Breezes Hotel in Sosua, Puerto Plata. It covers one day of classroom workshop and one day on site visits. The methodology features group discussions, mini lectures, demonstrations, hand-on activities and role plays. The cost of the workshop is RD$2,500 per person. |Richard Sobol and Ricardo Toribio
The Altos de Chavon Art Gallery in Casa de Campo, La Romana will be exhibiting the works of US photographer Richard Sobol and Dominican painter Ricardo Toribio that have blended their mediums to create oil paintings of photographic images. Richard Sobol's photographs of wildlife and the human experience have appeared in prominent newspapers and magazines throughout the globe and he is the author/photographer of ten books. Ricardo Toribio's oil paintings have been widely acclaimed throughout the Dominican Republic where he has held numerous solo exhibitions and won many awards. This new art makes for the exhibition, "Island of Dreams," where the two share their collective vision of the DR at the Altos de Chavon Gallery, Friday 7 October- Sunday, 6 November.
