Greatest discount fares to DR
Spirit, marketing itself as the discount airline for flights to the Caribbean, is offering incredibly attractive fares to the Dominican Republic from several US cities this winter. They are advertising the following fares: Atlantic City for as low as US$198 R/T into Santo Domingo and US$158 R/T into Punta Cana; Washington D.C. from US$238 R/T into Santo Domingo and US$258 R/T into Punta Cana. From Chicago, the discounted fares start at US$258 R/T into both Santo Domingo and Punta Cana airports. From La Guardia in NY, you can fly to Santo Domingo for US$178 R/T and into Punta Cana for US$138 R/T. Passengers flying from Detroit are being offered fares of US$318 R/T into Santo Domingo and US$178 R/T into Punta Cana. The Providence/Boston area has fares of US$258 into Santo Domingo and US$278 R/T into Punta Cana. Dallas Fort Worth travelers get to pay US$198 R/T into Santo Domingo and US$158 R/T into Punta Cana. Atlanta fares start at US$198 R/T into Santo Domingo and Punta Cana alike. The Fort Lauderdale connection offers fares of US$178 R/T into Santo Domingo and an outstanding US$78 R/T into Punta Cana.
Travel must be booked on spiritair.com by 11:59pm ET on 9 January 2006 for travel through April 30, 2006 as specified by the market. Note that government taxes and fees, that need to be added on to the tickets, can be up to US$125 per round trip.
Master of the Ocean
The Master of the Ocean will again take place in Cabarete, Puerto Plata. This event is a wave riding triathlon - combining windsurfing, kitesurfing and surfing. Luciano Gonzalez of the Dominican Republic, who won the event in 2005, will try to repeat his feat. The event was created to select the world's best overall water sports athlete. Competitors have to be the best in surfing, windsurfing in waves as well as kiteboarding in waves. Qualifying rounds will take place on the 23 and 24 February in Cabarete beach. The top 16 qualified athletes will then compete in the finals that will be hosted in Playa Encuentro and Bozo Beach sections of Cabarete on the 25, 26 and 27 of Feb. 28 February is the reserve day.

Puerto Plata cable car repaired
The cable car ride to the top of Loma Isabel de Torres has once again become one of the North Coast's top attractions, following repair work costing RD$20 million. The only cable car in the DR was out of service for 45 days during which time its cables were replaced. The work was carried out by the Ministry of Tourism and the Cable Car Board of Trustees. Listin Diario reports that this is the third time the cables have been replaced since 1975.
David Ortiz is playing DR baseball
Boston's David Ortiz is playing ball in the semi-finals of the Dominican Winter Professional Baseball League this week. David Ortiz has been ranked fifth, fourth and second in the last voting for the American League most valued player. He hadn't played in the Dominican baseball league for two years. Ortiz hopes to help the Escogido Lions make it to the finals that start on 18 January. General manager of the Escogido Lions, Raymond Abreu said that David Ortiz's presence alone would be a great motivation for the team's players.
The Clintons visit
The former US President and the Senator for the State of New York, Bill and Hillary Clinton are vacationing in the DR and had lunch with President Leonel Fernandez yesterday at the home of designer Oscar de la Renta in Punta Cana. They were accompanied by Punta Cana Group's Frank Rainieri and Ted Kheel. The Clinton family, including daughter Chelsea, arrived at Punta Cana International Airport on 31 December 2005. This is reportedly the Clintons' fifth vacation in the DR during the holidays.
