More Delta flights to DR
Delta Air Lines announces it is expanding its service to the Dominican Republic. Delta is adding new nonstop flights between Atlanta and central city Santiago and a New York (JFK) connection to Punta Cana (PUJ) on the East Coast effective 9 December 2006. Bob Cortelyou, Delta's vice president - Network Planning announced Delta is offering special low fares to mark the start of the flights. Tickets must be purchased by 7 August 2006 and travel must be completed by 31 March 2007. One-way fares, based on a round-trip purchase, are as follows: From JFK to PUJ, one-way fares of US$159. From ATL to STI one way fares of US$199. Taxes, fees and some restrictions apply.
The new routes to the DR mark the fifth increase in service to the island since summer 2004 when Delta inaugurated its first flights between New York and Santo Domingo. With the winter 2006 schedule, Delta will offer seven daily departures between the United States and the Dominican Republic with daily nonstop service between Atlanta and New York-JFK and Santiago, Santo Domingo and Punta Cana, in addition to new daily nonstop service between Atlanta and Puerto Plata (effective 15 December).
Delta highlights that "the DR is one of the fastest growing destinations in the Caribbean thanks to its picturesque white-sand beaches, lively colonial cities and large centers of commerce. The country sits on the second-largest island in the Caribbean and is the home of the oldest colonial city in the New World - Santo Domingo."
Republic of Baseball in NY
Today, 10% of all players in the US Baseball Major Leagues are Dominicans. The film "The Republic of Baseball" that tells the story of how Dominicans came to influence "America's favorite pastime" will be shown on Dominican Night at the New York International Latino Film Festival this Thursday, 27 July at 8 pm at Florence Gould Hall (55 East 59th Street). The film will then be released to PBS stations by Latino Public Broadcasting this September to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the man who started it all, Ozzie Virgil. Dominican Night will bring together films from today's emerging Dominican filmmakers.
Producers Dan Manatt and Rob Ruck explain that "The Republic of Baseball" is the story of that first extraordinary generation of players from the Dominican Republic - Felipe Alou, Juan Marichal, and Manny Mota - who overcame poverty, the brutalities of the Trujillo dictatorship, the upheaval of the U.S. invasion of 1965, and racism in America. Their impact, and all that they endured, has profoundly reshaped baseball and their nation.
Air conditioning at the Cathedral
Visitors to the first cathedral in the New World, that of Santo Domingo, will soon be able to enjoy climatized service. As of Wednesday, 16 August the Cathedral hopes to be offering mass in cool temperatures.
The air conditioning system called for the installation of 20 units of 24,000 BTU, as reported in Diario Libre.
The air conditioning will make the Easter and Christmas choral presentations so much more agreeable. The office in charge of the climatizing has not revealed the cost of the project that was picked up by the Dominican government.
