DATE is coming
The National Hotel & Restaurant Association is hosting the 8th Dominican Annual Tourism Exchange (DATE) in the Barcelo Convention Center in Bavaro 12-14 April 2007, in the Punta Cana area. The event is the most important marketing activity for Dominican hotels held in the DR every year. Over 150 local travel suppliers will be offering their services to tour operators and international travel vendors from around the world. The opening event is scheduled for Thursday, 12 December at 7 pm at the Club Caleton of Cap Cana. DATE is also sponsored by the Association of Hotels of the East, the Ministry of Tourism and Barcelo Hotels, among other companies.

The president of NH Hoteles, Gabriele Burgio of Spain visited to announce NH Hoteles will be operating two additional five-star hotels in the Dominican Republic, a US$150 million investment. NH Hoteles would be investing up to US$5 million in the US$150 million venture with other partners. The other partners were not named.
The hotels will be marketed as Hotel Bavaro Real Arena and Hotel VIP Real Arena. Burgio made the announcement at a press conference hosted by the Ministry of Tourism. Hotel Bavaro Real Arena will have 660 rooms and a convention center, while VIP Real Arena will have 375 rooms.
In 2005, NH Hoteles announced a first association agreement with Cap Cana to build a 90-room boutique beach hotel and 250 rental apartments in that development, which would be owned 50% each by NH Hoteles and Cap Cana, also along the East Coast beach strip.
The company made the announcement at a time when it is concentrating EUR1.3 billion in new hotel operations, primarily in Germany and Italy. NH Hoteles operates 258 hotels with 37,643 rooms in 19 countries in Europe, Latin America and Africa.
Casa de Campo Easter program
Casa de Campo has announced its Easter Week Program that this year features a Special Andalucian Festival, performance by Diego Torres at Altos de Chavon, golf, tennis, equestrian and shooting tournaments. Easter Week is the peak domestic vacation travel holiday.

Rethinking the city of Santo Domingo
Barcelona consultant Eulogio Bordas of THR presented the Strategic Plan for the Development of Santo Domingo on contract by the Santo Domingo Tourism Cluster. The plan provides guidelines for developing Santo Domingo into a more attractive tourism destination. Participating in the Santo Domingo Cluster are tourism stakeholders, the Municipality of Santo Domingo, the ministries of Tourism and Culture and the National Competitiveness Council. Named "Cambia Santo Domingo" (Change Santo Domingo), the plan envisions creating the conditions so that more businesses evolve in the historic Colonial Zone and for the remodeling of 40 of the most important avenues in the city.

22-year old Indira Massiel Taveras Henriquez, 5'7" brunette will represent the Dominican Republic in Miss Universe, to be held this June in Cancun, Mexico. She is an interior decorator student, who has studied English and Italian. She likes to paint, and loves to dance, having studied jazz and belly dance. She represented Santiago in the event. Her win is a family story of perseverance. Her sister, Isaura Taveras was the runner up in the 2004 pageant.
