DATE 2007
Luis Lopez, head of the National Hotel and Restaurant Association (ASONAHORES), spoke at the inauguration of the eighth annual Dominican Annual Tourism Exchange (DATE) at the Barcelo Bavaro Convention Center last week. During his speech, Lopez said that the country's tourist sector is doing well because of the diversification of the hotel industry, the services it offers, and investment in tourism infrastructure. Lopez also pointed out that the DR was the leading golf tourism destination in the Caribbean in 2006 and that new golf courses that are under construction will consolidate this position.
Two new courses in Punta Cana
Golfers traveling to the Punta Cana area on the east coast of the Dominican Republic have two new options, the White Sands Golf Course and the Punta Blanca Golf Course.
The par 72 9-hole White Sands Golf Course is located near the Ocean Blue property in the Bavaro Beach area. The additional nine holes are scheduled for completion this summer. The White Sands Golf Course was designed by six-time Spanish champion Pepe Gancedo, who is also responsible for the Barcelo Bavaro golf course.
The Nick Price-designed 18-hole par 72 Punta Blanca Golf Club course is located at Arena Gorda Beach near the Barcelo Punta Cana Resort (formerly Breezes Punta Cana). Barcelo Punta Cana Resort provides its guests with complimentary transportation to and from the golf course. Special golf packages are also available.
AA wants a DR hub
American Airlines DR director Eduardo del Pozo says that the company is interested in setting up a hub for its American Eagle brand in the country. Del Pozo said that as from July three planes will be permanently based in the DR and will make trips to Curacao, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and Haiti. He said that they are currently waiting for approval from the US Civil Aviation Board. Del Pozo estimates that an additional 150,000 visitors will fly to the DR in the first year if these new routes are added. American Airlines also recently requested the right to fly to Puerto Rico from Samana.
Cirque Du Soleil for marina opening
Cirque Du Soleil, Juan Luis Guerra and the Santo Domingo Philharmonic directed by Amaury Sanchez are booked for the lavish opening of the first phase of the Cap Cana Marina on 28 April. The first phase will have capacity for 72 yachts of up to 60 feet. Once completed, the marina will have 1,500 slots with capacity for yachts or mega-yachts of up to 250 feet. President Leonel Fernandez is expected to attend the event, and Donald Trump will be among the special guests. He will be launching Trump Farallon Estates, a 68-home residential complex, with lots ranging from 6,000 to 24,000 square meters located at 200 feet above sea level.
Also new this year at Cap Cana is the Hotel Sanctuary Cap Cana Golf & Spa, with 176 suites, that is due to open this year. By year's end, the Golden Bear Lodge condominium that will operate as a boutique-hotel is expected to be open to the general public.
