The 12th Dominican Tourism Bourse (BTC 2008) will take place at the Hotel Jaragua from17-19 April. The conference focuses on the Caribbean travel industry, Central America and South America, with an emphasis on promoting multi-destination travel. Talks this year include a presentation on port infrastructure for the sustainable development of maritime travel, with Luis Molina, director of Sans Souci Ports, Tourism Globalization with Luis Callejon, executive director of the Costa del Sol-Torremolinos exhibition hall, Ecoturism in the East of the DR with Roberto Sanchez, and City Tourism Marketing with Joseph Garzozi, director of tourism for Guayaquil, Ecuador.
|Fairmont stakes claim in Punta Cana
Toronto-based Fairmont Hotels & Resorts is joining Four Seasons, Ritz Carlton, Sotogrande, Westin, Maxim and other international brands that have discovered the Dominican Republic and are now marketing the destination to their clientele.
Fairmont Hotels & Resorts formally announced construction of the 255-room Fairmont Roco Ki, the Fairmont Residences (condominiums, villas and estate homes), and Fairmont Heritage Place, a private residence club, due for completion by 2010.
In addition to Macao Beach, one of the Fairmont's attractions will be the Nick Faldo-designed 18-hole championship golf course, which winds along the beach through a dense mangrove forest and stretches across the property's headland with stunning cliff-top views of the turquoise sea.

|World Poker Showdown at Ocean World
Puerto Plata will be hosting the World Poker Showdown at the Ocean World Casino in Cofresi from 9 to 18 May. Players are expected from the US, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Bahamas, Panama, Venezuela and the DR. The main event will be held on 17 May, from 2pm until late, and then restarting on 18 May at 12 noon until finish. The entrance fee is US$2,650. A few days before the main event, there will be live satellite tournaments with a US$340 entry fee. Players can also qualify online on TitanPoker.com, Pacific Poker.com and JonWoodpoker.net

Cicom and Grupo Preferente of Mallorca, Spain have come together to produce "Mirador", a free tourism trade magazine focusing on the Dominican travel industry. The first issue was launched during DATE, the Dominican Annual Travel Exchange that took place in Punta Cana earlier this month. Mirador will provide articles, investigative reports and analysis on the sector. It will also feature international industry stories deemed of interest to the local market. Subscriptions to the magazine can be made by calling 809 683-3881. Its first issue focuses on the impact of Cap Cana and its effects on industry leader Casa de Campo. It also reports that Haydee Kuret de Rainieri of Grupo Puntacana was the consensus candidate to head the National Hotel & Restaurant Association board, starting in September 2008. Other features of the first issue are Samana's new airport, restoration efforts in the historic center of Puerto Plata, and a biography of Miguel Escarrer, founder of Sol Melia chain.
Manuel Quiterio Cedeno is the editor of the magazine. Cedeno says that the publication's objective is to defend the industry that is fundamental for the country's development.

Paradisus, the luxury brand of the Sol Melia chain, has announced its new addition of The Reserve, that promises to be the "ultimate all-inclusive". The Reserve combines "the real life fantasy" of a vacation home and the facilities of a five-star hotel.
