Summer Jazz at Casa de Teatro
Santo Domingo boasts the best night life in the DR and summer is the time when Casa de Teatro welcomes leading jazz performers for its Annual Summer Jazz Festival, with performances every Thursday throughout June and July. Musicians are coming from Cuba, Argentina, the US, France, Spain and many of the best from the DR will be joining them for the 10th year of the festival. This year the festival will be dedicated to Guillo Carias, regarded as a living Dominican jazz legend. This year's list of foreign performers includes Roberto Carcasse and his trio from Cuba, Bryan Lynch from the US, and Paula Shokron and trio from Argentina. From Europe, Spain's Natalia Calderon and Ossia Saxophons from France. Guillo Carias will be playing with Rafael Mirabal and Sistema Temperano, and Patricia Pereyra will be on stage.
Performances take place at the Cristobal de Llerena auditorium, with a giant screen outside in the Cafe Teatro for those who prefer an informal setting to talk with friends. And there will be a special concert with Bryan Lynch from the US at the Plaza Bartolome de las Casas on Saturday, 4 July.
This year's schedule is: 18 June: Roberto Carcasse and his trio (Cuba); 25 June: Rafael Mirabal and Sistema Temperado (DR); 2 July: Patricia Pereyra (DR); 4 July: Bryan Lynch (USA); 9 July: Ossia Saxophons (France); 16 July: Natalia Calderon Quartet (Spain); 23 July: Guillo Carias and his group (DR); 30 July: Paula Shokron and trio (Argentina). Tickets are for sale for RD$350 for hall performance, and RD$200 for the Cafe Teatro.
New NH hotel for winter
Spanish hotel chain NH is opening its second hotel in the Punta Cana area. The NH Royal Beach, due to open in time for the winter season will have 373 rooms and its royal suites are targeting affluent tourists. The hotel seeks to attract weddings, honeymooners and family and friend reunions. The NH Royal Beach will open next door to the chain's NH Real Arena, both centrally located in Bavaro. It will be marketed under the NH Luxury Resorts brand for premium service at all-inclusive resorts.
Carmen Rosa de Torres, commercial director for NH Hotels in the country, said that the hotel would be building on the success of the first NH hotel product, especially their Paradise Club. "With this second investment we reaffirm our trust in the potential of the DR as a world class destination," she said, upon making the announcement that the hotel will be taking bookings for the winter season.

Miss Ambar Mundial 2009
Riu Hotels and the Ministry of Tourism are sponsoring the International Miss Ambar Beauty contest in Santo Domingo and Bavaro, Punta Cana on 12-27 July. It will be hosted at the Riu hotels in Punta Cana, the Club Atlantico Punta Cana and the Hotel Hispaniola in Santo Domingo. The beauty queens will visit several attractions, and will do voluntary work at a children's hospital. The crowning of the queen will take place at the Teatro del Hotel Riu Palace Punta Cana before a jury of international judges. The event will be televised. Participants are coming from 30 countries and 5 continents. Karen Yapoort will represent the DR. The event is organized by Gatsby Dominicana.
Chilean Gastronomy Festival in June
From 2-12 June, the Sol y Sombra Restaurant at the Santo Domingo Hilton Hotel will be celebrating the Chilean Gastronomy Festival. For the event, Giancarlo Mazarrelli and Noe Chaparro are coming all the way from Chile to serve much of the best of their country to patrons. The event is sponsored by Copa Airlines, Prochile, Decanter and Anakena Wines. The Festival includes a wine-tasting night on 3 June, a food-wine tasting event on 4 June, a night of Chilean seafood from 5 to 12 June, and brunch on 7 June. A group of Chilean musicians will be performing at the restaurant during the event. Hector Concari, general manager of the Santo Domingo Hilton, made the announcement. Visitors to the Festival will take part in a raffle for a paid trip to Santiago de Chile and wine tour of the Anakena vineyard.
