African heritage festival
San Cristobal is bringing together African heritage groups from 13 provinces nationwide for a tribute to the beat of the drums, inherited from the African slaves brought to the island in the 15th Century. The Sainagua Atabales Festival, in its 35th year, honors late Dominican singer and composer Luis Dias. Dias incorporated many of the original rhythms of these grass roots groups into his catchy compositions. The festival will take place over the weekend of 26, 27, 28 November. Roldan Marmol and the Fundacion Sol Naciente are the organizers of the festival that is a weekend of atabales, songs, dance, creative workshops, arts and crafts sales, gastronomy and Dominican folklore.
