CHTA celebrates its 50th anniversary
The Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association (CHTA) will meet to celebrate its 50th anniversary with a Caribbean Tourism Summit at the Ritz-Carlton Rose Hall in Jamaica from 15-16 June.
Planned sessions will focus on:
- International Aviation Policy - Its Impact on Caribbean Tourism
- A Review of Existing Airlift Into and Within the Caribbean and Projections for Future Development
- How Competitive is the Caribbean Vacation Experience?
- Caribbean Hotels - Are They Being Upstaged by Competitors from the Indian Ocean and Southeast Asia?
- People to People: The Importance of Service, Not Only in Hotels and Restaurants, but with Taxis, Shopping and in Government Services
"CHTA's Golden Jubilee marks a historic occasion in the Caribbean hospitality and tourism industry," said Josef Forstmayr, president of CHTA.
"This is an exciting time for the Caribbean as we celebrate this golden milestone and, at the same time, turn a page in our strategy for developing the Caribbean brand as we embark on new public and private sector cooperation in marketing our region," said Richard "Ricky" Skerritt, Minister of Tourism for St. Kitts and Chairman of CTO.
"This is Jamaica's 50th year of independence," says John Lynch, Jamaica's Director of Tourism, who added that the occasion provides the perfect backdrop for hosting this historic Caribbean Tourism Summit. He said that attendees would also be taking part in 50th anniversary activities that will coincide with the event.

Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Investment Conference in Puerto Rico
The 16th Annual Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Investment Conference (CHTIC) is scheduled for 24-26 April at the Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It is geared at emphasizing the need for public and private sector partnerships in order to maximize investment opportunities in the Caribbean tourism industry.
"Tourism is our region's number one economy and we must do everything to attract new tourism investment into the region to be able to expand our tourism product and therefore maintain our global competitive position as the world's leading warm weather destination", said Josef Forstmayr, president of the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association (CHTA). "This year's Investment Conference program will be geared at jumpstarting investment opportunities in the tourism industry."

Men's World Volleyball Tournament in Santo Domingo
For the first time ever, this June the FIVB Men's Volleyball World League 2012 Championship will be held in Santo Domingo. The tournament brings some of the best men's volleyball in the world to the DR's capital city.
The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) announced that from 15 to 17 June, Pool A of the FIVB Volleyball World League 2012 would be staged at the Volleyball Pavilion of the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center. The leading annual men's volleyball tournament was originally due to be held at the new Havana Sports City Coliseum but it will not be finished in time.
For the first time in the history of the event, which dates back to 1990, all four teams in each pool will be playing a host city on a weekend. Each country will take turns to host in their respective pools all four teams, and fans everywhere will be closely following the volleyball odds when this takes place.
In Santo Domingo, Cuba will now face defending champions Russia, Serbia and Japan - with the support of both NORCECA and the Volleyball Federation of Dominican Republic.
The Dominican Republic's men's team will not be competing in the event, only teams from Cuba, Russia, Serbia and Japan. The schedule of the other events for the 23rd World League championships can be followed at:

18 March in Los Dajaos
The Second Tribute-Fair to Nature in Jarabacoa with Puerto Rican singer Danny Rivera and singers from the Dominican Republic including Pavel Nunez, Roldan and Cheo Zorrilla, is a benefit to help farmers and the community of Los Dajaos, through funds raised by the admission fee and purchases of food, arts and crafts. The event showcases the region's ecological, tourism, agricultural and cultural attractions with an emphasis on creating awareness of the importance of environmental conservation. Funds will be used to improve community infrastructure, including roads, a new school, the clinic and a new medical center, and prepare for a sustainable tourism ecological center with a restaurant. Organized by Fundacion Loma Verde, the Sunday, 18 March event is a repeat of the memorable First Nature Fair held 15 years ago. Jarabacoa is less than two hours drive from Santo Domingo or Puerto Plata. The all-day event, scheduled to be over by sunset, has the support of farming organizations in Los Dajaos and Manabao, and the Universidad Agroforestal Fernando Arturo de Merino (UAFAM) in Jarabacoa.
