Blue Marlin fishing in Punta Cana waters
It's summer and the time when the majestic blue marlins tour the waters of eastern Dominican Republic in bigger numbers. Two important fishing tournament are planned. These are:
Cap Cana, the hotel and residential development in the southern end of the Punta Cana coast, is hosting its Cap Cana Classic (Blue Marlin) for 24-26 July (Blue Marlin). Competitors come from the DR, the US, Puerto Rico, Aruba, Venezuela and the Virgin Islands.
The 22nd Blue Marlin International Fishing Tournament organized by the Santo Domingo Yacht Club at its Cabeza de Toro facilities will follow from 2-4 August.
These tournaments are held by the modality catch and release. They follow the rules of the International Game and Fishing Association (IGFA).
Baseball Season starts 14 October
Take note that winter professional baseball in the Dominican Republic this year begins earlier, on Sunday 14 October. The tournament is played in Santo Domingo (Quisqueya Ball Park), San Francisco de Macoris (Julian Javier Ball Park) and San Pedro de Macoris (Tetelo Vargas Ball Park), and La Romana (the Francisco Micheli) and Santiago (Cibao Ball Park) and runs through the first week of February 2013.
Baseball fans staying in Boca Chica and Juan Dolio can easily catch the action at the Santo Domingo or La Romana stadiums. Those staying in Samana can head to the San Francisco stadium. Those staying in Puerto Plata should plan for games at the Santiago ball park. Get together a group and get the hotel to arrange for a van. The driver will be more than happy to join you for the game and wait to take you there and back. He can also assist you in purchasing the tickets.
Games in Santo Domingo and San Francisco de Macoris start at 7:30pm from Monday to Friday, and on Saturdays, Sundays and holiday games will start at 5pm.
At the Santiago and La Romana stadiums, games will start at 7:30pm Monday to Saturday, and at 5pm on Sundays and holidays. In San Pedro, games will start at 8pm Monday to Saturday and on Sundays and holidays at 5pm.
This year, the semi-finals are scheduled to start 27 December. There will be no games on 31 December, and Mondays 1, 7 and 12 of January. The finals are held the last two weeks of January. MLB players join their local teams for the finals to help them win the right to represent the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean Series.
World Racquetball Championship in Santo Domingo
Many of the best racquetball players in the world will be in Santo Domingo for The IRF XVI Elite World Championship that will be held in the Dominican Republic's capital city from 4-11 August 2012. The event is sponsored by the International Racquetball Federation and the Dominican Racquetball Federation and is a qualifier for the World Games to take place in Cali, Colombia in 2013. The venue is the Racquetball Pavilion at the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center in Santo Domingo.

Dominicans in the Olympics
If you are traveling to the Dominican Republic while the London Olympics (27 July-12 August) are taking place. No problem. There are many sports bars, and many more restaurants have large TV screens to watch the events. Cable TV in hotel rooms also makes it easy to follow the competitions.
Dominicans here will be following how the 35-athlete strong delegation does. The DR will be competing in 10 sports.
Best chances for medals are on the shoulders of Luguelin Santos (400 meters run), Yuderquis Contreras in weightlifting, Gabriel Mercedes in taekwondo and Yamilet Pena in artistic gymnastics.
The DR will compete in track and field (11), boxing (3), gymnastics (1), judo (1), shooting (1), swimming (2), taekwondo (1), table tennis (1), weight lifting (2) and volleyball (12).
Track and Field: The men are Winder Cuevas, Felix Sanchez (400m hurdles), Luguelin Santos (400m), Carlos Jorge (200m), Felix Sanchez, Luguelin Santos, Gustavo Cuesta, Arismendy Peguero, John Soriano and Joel Mejia (4 x 400 m relay) and the women Ildette Lavonne (100 m hurdles), Marielis Sanchez (200 m), Raysa Sanchez (400 m).
Boxing: William Encarnacion (bantamweight), Wellington Arias (lightweight), Junior Castillo (middleweight).
Gymnastics: Yamilet Pena (women)
Judo: Maria Garcia (52 kg)
Shooting: Sergio Pinero (trap)
Swimming: Nicolas Schwab (200 m freestyle), female swimmer Dorian McMenemy (100 m butterfly)
Table Tennis: Luis Lin Ju (men's singles)
Taekwondo: Yulis Gabriel Mercedes
Weightlifting: Yuderkis Contreras (53 kg), Beatriz Piron (women)
