Axiom Brass Quintet concerts in Colonial Santo Domingo
Conciertos de la Villa de Santo Domingo is a series of musical concerts being held once again in the setting of the 16th Century Colonial City of Santo Domingo. This year includes performances by Chicago's Axiom Brass Quintet that will set up residence for a week to play concerts in the palaces and gardens of the Colonial City, and educational concerts at the Iglesia del Convento de los Dominicos and the Centro Leon in Santiago. Axiom Brass will also hold master classes for members of the National Youth Orchestra and students of music in the Dominican Republic.
The Axiom Brass Quintet is praised for its "high level of musicality and technical ability" and "clean, clear and precise sound". The award-winning Axiom Brass Quintet has quickly established itself as "one of the major art music groups in brass chamber music and is the only Brass Quintet in 27 years to ever win the prestigious Chamber Music Yellow Springs Competition (2012).
The two concerts for the general public are Serenata en las Casas Reales with Renaissance and Baroque period music, and Holiday Brass music to bring in the Christmas spirit on Monday, 19 November at 8:30pm at the Museo de las Casas Reales. Noche de los Jardines is on Wednesday, 21 November and Thursday, 22 November at the Quinta Dominica, Calle Padre Billini 202, Colonial City. Tickets RD$8:30pm. Evening flights now day flights for Delta
Travelers flying on Delta from Santiago and Santo Domingo to New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport need to know that as of 5 November, Delta flight 487 from Las Americas International in Santo Domingo (SDQ) to JFK in New York City will depart in the morning, at 9am, instead of at 9:20pm in the evening. Likewise, Delta flight 488 from JFK to Santo Domingo will depart at 2:48pm instead of at 2:15am.
Other changes for the next peak Christmas travel season is that the Delta 555 flight from JFK to Santiago that left at 8:58pm will now take off at 9:15am and Delta 556 from Santiago will be changed from a 2:22am departure to 3:06pm.
The new schedules are:
JFK to SDQ: Flight 493 departs 7:41am, arrives 12:32pm. Return is Flight 494 departing SDQ at 1:32pm arriving 4:30pm. And Flight 487 departs 9am, arrives 1:48pm, and 488 departs 2:48pm and arrives 5:46pm.
JFK to STI: Flight 549 departs 7:20am, arrives 12:07pm. Return is Flight 550 that departs 1:07pm and arrives 3:55pm. And Flight 555 departs 9:15am and arrives 2:02pm. Return is Flight 556 departing 3:06pm and arriving 6pm.
Maria Fernanda Price, regional manager for Delta for the Caribbean and Central America says that changes give customers more flexibility especially for continuing flights. Delta recently announced its long-term alliance with Brazilian low-cost carrier Gol Linhas Aereas Inteligentes, and with Aeromexico and Aerolineas Argentinas.
Sheraton first, then Westin to follow in Punta Cana
In response to the increasing market share of more US tourists traveling to the Dominican Republic, Starwood Hotels announces the opening of its first hotel in the Dominican Republic this October, the Four Points by Sheraton Punta Cana Village. The business hotel is less than five minutes from the Punta Cana International Airport. Brian McGuinness, senior vice president of Specialty Select Brands for Starwood, announced that the Sheraton opening would be followed by the opening of The Westin Puntacana Resort in late 2013.
The newly constructed hotel features 124 stylish and comfortable guest rooms, an outdoor pool and access to five miles of private beach. Four Points by Sheraton Puntacana Village also provides 1,614 square feet of state-of-the-art meeting facilities, a 24/7 business center equipped with cutting-edge audiovisual technology and wireless Internet access, a fully equipped fitness facility and full-service dining. Guests can stroll to the shops, restaurants and salons of Galerias Puntacana within the Village, and hop on the hotel's complimentary shuttle to visit Six Senses Spa, the Puntacana Ecological Reserve and the golf courses located at Puntacana Resort & Club.

Eight artists exhibiting at new Camilo Carrau Art Hall in Puerto Plata
Eight Dominican artists are showing their work at the inaugural exhibition, New Looks to the North, of the Sala de Arte Camilo Carrau in Puerto Plata. The artists are Alberto Khoury, Eliu Almonte, Pery Jimenez, Grimaldi Polanco, Sorangel Fermin, Arlyn Jimenez, Orlando Menicucci and Gypsy de los Santos.
The Sala de Arte Camilo Carrau is located in the same Victorian house as the Puerto Plata artist in whose honor it is named lived. Center coordinator Alberto Khoury said that the art hall is a space for reflection and a contribution to the country's educational, cultural and social development. He stressed that the center seeks to serve as a meeting place for people, and that events will be organized for a range of audiences, creating a space for the arts as a form of expression.
Deputy Minister of Tourism Cesar Jose de los Santos attended the event along with Regional Culture Director Rene Merette and the director of the Puerto Plata Tourism Cluster, as well as artists and prominent Puerto Plata community members.

Oktoberfest at Barcelo hotels
Germans take note. Barcelo is inviting you to the Dominican version of the traditional Munich Oktoberfest. The Barcelo chain of hotels announces its second Oktoberfest beer festival for 18 October at the Barcelo Puerto Plata in Playa Dorada in the north coast. On 19-20 October, the beer festival goes east opening at the Barcelo Bavaro Beach hotel. A Beer Garden is being set up at the hotel's main pool and the program includes a special tasting of typical German food (sausages, biscuits and lots of beer). There will also be live music.
