Bavaro Runners
Tourists taking the Bavaro Runners safari excursions may not realize just how major an impact they are making on their host communities. The excursion company invites tourists to join the Giving Back to the Community program whereby they contribute to painting the countryside homes of the residents in rural communities visited. The upkeep is contributing to the preservation of traditional architecture and pride in the wood and zinc homes of the countryside that otherwise would be replaced by homogenous cement houses. This is what happened in La Otra Banda, the once precious collection of wooden houses that are being replaced by modern cement houses and large warehouses filled with arts and crafts, many imported from China.
Tourists taking the Bavaro Runners excursions can take pride in helping the communities that can now showcase the colors of the tropics, by preserving their rustic wooden homes iconic of the Caribbean.

One million Russian tourists?
More Russians than Germans visited the Dominican Republic last year. Russia is now the fourth leading source market for tourism in the Dominican Republic, after the US, Canada and France. Russian tourism was up 35% last year, with around 164,000 new arrivals.
The increase continues with a 33% increase in the first quarter of the year.
Arrivals on 449 direct flights to Russia brought some 158,415 tourists to the Dominican Republic, reports Resumen Turismo.
At present, 12 flights arrive to PUJ. Russians arrive on Transaero (eight weekly flights), from Moscow and San Petersburg. Aeroflot has two weekly flights to St. Petersburg. Orenair has two weekly flights from Moscow. Arrivals also come from St. Petersburg, Moscow and Ekaterinburg.
The aim now is to reach the one million Russian tourist number in 2013.
Most Russian tourists travelling abroad are upper-middle class, and therefore the typical Russian tourist has high purchasing power. Statistics also show that Russian tourists are mostly aged between 25 and 45.
Xeliter expands its rentals portfolio
Ramon Tejada and Joel Santos of Xeliter, Coral Hospitality's rentals operation, announced at DATE Punta Cana that Marbella, Costa del Sol I and Costa del Sol II, high-rise luxury apartments in Juan Dolio have been added to their portfolio of 13 luxury vacation rentals.
"Our strategy is to present a diversified offer," said Tejeda. He acknowledges that the DR is best known for its all-inclusive properties but says they have specialized in a different operation that is also in great demand. "This is closely linked to an area like Juan Dolio that has two golf courses (Guavaberry and Los Marlins), attractive gastronomy, and will soon have a new water park to be located 15 minutes from Juan Dolio and just 45 minutes from Santo Domingo.
Xeliter already has 1,500 apartments in its rental pool, approximately 3,000 rooms.
Joel Santos says: "This development model is very tied to multi-destination. Lodging that is not all-included allows for greater mobility so that the visitor can enjoy several destinations in one stay."
Coral Hospitality Corps encompasses Coral Hotels, Xeliter and Xeliter Rentals.
Other Xeliter Rentals properties are Vista Mare in Samana, and Marina Sands and Caleton Villas in Cap Cana.
Xeliter Rentals offers apartment and villa rentals in beach and mountain destinations in the Dominican Republic.
Airlines from Spain
