Fishing on the new Malecon piers
Plaza Juan Baron, Plaza Guibia, Paseo Maritimo 30 de Mayo (opening in two months) and Parque Eugenio Maria de Hostos (opening 2013) are part of major urban renewal efforts for the city's sea-fronting boulevard.
Mayor of Santo Domingo Roberto Salcedo announced last week that the first phase of the Paseo Maritimo 30 de Mayo would be ready in two months time. The new city walkway is under construction on a 4.5 km stretch on the Malecon between Abraham Lincoln and Nunez de Caceres avenues. Six piers now extend into the Caribbean Sea for use by recreational fishing during the day and even at night is the novelty of the renewed public space. These will also serve as miradors and there will be security by municipal police during the day and night. The works are costing RD$175 million said the mayor.
The city government is working to improve the sea-bordering protected area that stretches around 15 kms from west to east at the south side of Santo Domingo.
The Executive Branch also sent to Congress last week changes to the Tourism Incentives Law 158-01 to include the area of the Malecon. Hotels and tourism projects that qualify can enjoy 10 years of tax exemptions.

He came through with the promise and the townspeople now enjoy a brand new, perfectly paved, sidewalk framed and well-lit boulevard.
