Asonahores Travel Show 10-12 September 2014
The National Hotel & Tourist Association (Asonahores) has announced its 28th annual travel trade show for 10 to 12 September 2014 in Punta Cana. This year's event will be held at the Barcelo Bavaro Convention Center. The 28th edition of the trade show will be dedicated to Constructora del Pais (Codelpa) and engineer Alvaro Pena for their immeasurable contributions to the tourist sector. Codelpa has worked on the construction and renovation of the country's leading hotels over the past 25 years, including the Barcelo Bavaro Palace Deluxe, Gran Bahia Principe Bavaro, Gran Bahia Principe Ambar, Gran Bahia Principe El Portillo, Now Larimar Punta Cana, Secrets Royal Beach, and Ocean Blue & Sand. This year there will be a Chocolate Contest, with the participation of pastry chefs. Hotel bartenders will also compete to display their creativity in producing new cocktails. Merengue Festival set for 1-2 August 2014
Leading merengue bands will be playing at the Plaza Juan Baron on the Malecon oceanfront boulevard in Santo Domingo for the Ministry of Tourism-sponsored traditional merengue festival. Booked to play at the city park as part of the Merengue and Caribbean Beats Festival are Los Hermanos Rosario, Krisspy, Miriam Cruz, Kinito Mendez, Mozart la Para, Chiquito Team Band, Chimbala, and Sexappeal. The event is sponsored by Brugal rum.
Travel up 8.5% for first half of year
The Central Bank reports that non-resident arrivals for the first half of the year totaled 2.7 million, a 8.5% increase over the first half of 2013. Travel was up by 208,763 visitors from January to June 2014.
There were monthly increases, with the exception of June. Overall, arrivals of non-resident foreigners were up by 12.6% in June 2014, compared to the same month last year.
Punta Cana International Airport continued to be the main port of air entry with 64.3% of all air arrivals. Most travelers landing in Punta Cana are headed for the beach destination's more than 40 resorts.
Statistics show that 379,987 foreign tourists arrived via the Punta Cana International Airport during the first half of the year, 33,936 more people than in June 2013.
Travel from the United States, Canada and Mexico was up by 10.9% in June 2014, for 22,812 additional travelers, mainly from the United States.
Travel from South America is up 22.1% compared to 2013, with many more visitors arriving from Venezuela, Colombia and Brazil.
Punta Cana stars in The Bachelorette
The Dominican Republic gained valuable exposure from the broadcast of the recent episode of The Bachelorette, an immensely popular reality TV show filmed at the Palma Real Paradisus in Punta Cana this year. ABC's reality television dating game showed bachelorette Andi Dorfman on her tropical adventure with three potential lovers - Josh, Nick and Chris. Viewers watched Andi and her three hopefuls at the Paradisus Punta Cana Resort for their romantic getaway. During the episode, Andi Dorfman dropped Chris Soules. She now must decide between Nick Viall and Josh Murray. The next episode is on ABC on 28 July 2014.
