Hotel occupancy great in Punta Cana
Most hotels in Punta Cana are new or have been refurbished, and rates are hard to beat in the Caribbean. As a result, occupancy remains high along the eastern beach strip. Ernesto Veloz, president of the Association of Hotels and Tourism Projects for the East forecasts that by the year's end around three million air arrivals will have visited on beach vacations.
Veloz says that this year has been the best in the past 10 years in terms of occupancy. He told Hoy reporters that there has been no slow season this year.
Arrivals headed for Punta Cana hotels make up 65% of all tourists coming to the DR, estimated at around five million for 2014.

Public Works Ministry opens 53 km of Uvero Alto-Miches road
The beaches of Uvero and Miches are now easier to reach. The Ministry of Public Works recently opened the northernmost stretch of the highway known as the touristic boulevard that starts at Punta Cana International Airport. The new highway was built by Brazilian company Odebrecht and Dominican company Sinercon and tourists headed to Uvero Alto and Miches hotels can now get there in half an hour less than before.
Minister of Public Works Gonzalo Castillo said that 6.5 km of access roads were built to connect 12 communities in the area.
"We are confident that the opening of the highway will change the future of this region and thus of the Dominican Republic," said Castillo.
Tourism industry, transport, provincial and community leaders were present for the ceremony that marked the start of use of the highway.
Odebrecht was represented by Marco Cruz, Rodrigo Medicis, Fernando Soares (director of the highway), Manuel Reategui and Carlos Manuel Loaces. Representatives of property owners in the area were also present: William Phela of Grupo Cisneros, Fernando Rainieri, and Pedro Delgado Malagon of Tecnoamerica, the group that supervised the work, Ernesto Veloz of the Association of Hotels and Tourism Projects of the East, Manolo Ramirez from the transport sector and the provincial governors of La Altagracia and El Seibo provinces that are connected by the highway.
The final stretch of the Uvero Alto-Miches-Sabana de la Mar highway will connect Sabana de la Mar for a total 112.8 km, and travel time of around 40 minutes.
The Ministry of Public Works announced that the Uvero Alto-Miches highway is costing US$265.3 million. The highway is scheduled for formal inauguration in late November or early December 2014.
Castillo highlighted the considerable savings in fuel and improved safety. He also pointed out that land located along the highway has considerably increased in value.
Speaking during the opening of the highway, engineer Pedro Delgado Malagon of Tecnoamerica said that the eastern region now has 320 km of first class roads. "This initiative has been implemented with the best quality possible, to build highways with the highest safety levels," he said. Ernesto Veloz described the east coast road system as "one of the best in all Latin America."
