Puerto Plata gets tourism boost
Deputy Minister of Tourism for Puerto Plata Julio Almonte is forecasting that the northern province will receive almost 1.3 million tourists in 2016. He estimates that 500,000 will arrive by air, another 350,000 on board cruise ships arriving at the new Amber Cove Cruise Center, while 400,000 will arrive overland, including foreign and domestic tourists.
Puerto Plata Destination Tourism Cluster president Maximo Iglesias forecasts a 10% increase in travel in 2016. He says this includes an additional 4% arriving by air and 3% by sea.
Whisky Bar in Santo Domingo
Santo Domingo has its own Whisky Bar, a joint venture between the Grupo de O.livia and Macallan whisky. The "W" Bar is a "speakeasy" bar with a whisky list of 120 varieties from Scotland, Ireland and the US state of Tennessee, as well as Japanese and Swedish brands. Erik Malmsten, executive chef and co-owner of Grupo de O.livia says it is a way of satisfying Dominican curiosity about the interesting world of whisky.
Rafael Rodriguez, brand ambassador for Macallan for the Dominican Republic says that patrons will find the most complete selection of Macallan whiskies at the bar, including Macallan Sherry Oak 12 Yrs., 1824 Series (Amber, Sienna, Ruby), to the Collection 1824 Masters Series (Rare Cask, Reflexion, No. 6 and M).
"W" is on Calle Max Henriquez Urena at the corner with Ave. Lope de Vega, next door to Restaurant O.livia. It is open from Tuesday to Sunday.
Where to go for New Year's Eve
The tradition in the Dominican Republic is to spend New Year's Eve at family celebrations and then head out to discos, clubs, restaurants or gatherings on city avenues. Many families and groups of friends also take off for the resorts to celebrate the New Year and organize their own New Year's Eve parties.
In Santo Domingo, expect to find large groups of people on Winston Churchill, Abraham Lincoln and Avenida del Puerto avenues, and on the Malecon, especially on Plaza Juan Baron.
The Colonial City's Plaza de Espana restaurants are offering special menus for the evening.
Nader Teatro Bar is hosting an evening of electronic music with NYE Glitz N'Glam with DJs Miss Gem and Roberto Heyaime. Tickets are RD$2,500 with open bar included.
City hotels hold their own parties: Hotel El Embajador with Mozart La Para, Shelow Shaq and El Alfa with premium bar. Tickets for sale at Uepa Tickets.
At the Hotel Jaragua, Fernando Villalona, Raulin Rodriguez, Los Hermanos Rosario, Rubby Perez, Conjunto Quisqueya, Chiquito Team Band, David Amparo, and Steffany Constanza will be the grand finale dance for the year on Thursday, 31 December from 10pm.
In Punta Cana
Former NBA star Shaquille O'Neal will be mixing the music for guests at the Punta Cana Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. There will be a party at the Oro Night Club and another at the Salon Filmore. Also performing will be DJ Diesel.
At the Salon Apolo VII of the Paradisus Palma Real Cuban singer Carlos Oliva and the Los Sobrinos will be the lead entertainers for the dinner-dance organized for the New Year celebration. Tickets US$250.

Opening up a new mountain destination
Brazilian construction company Odebrecht says that the process of paving the Piedra Blanca-Rancho Arriba road is making good progress. The road will open up access to new attractions like the mountain destinations of Rancho Arriba and San Jose de Ocoa to residents of Santo Domingo. The region is also a major farming area, with opportunities for agro-tourism opening up soon with the easy access from the Duarte Highway that links the country north and south.
Underrated but outstanding landscapes
Online travel magazine Afar presents what is describes as "underrated" but outstanding landscape views of the Dominican Republic for the enjoyment of its readers. It includes photographs of farms in Constanza and nearby hiking in Valle Nuevo National Park, the beach at El Morro in Montecristi in the northwest, exploring Jarabacoa's rivers and mountains, including Manabao, and Barahona's pebble beaches.
